Asma Abdelkarim - June 12, 2022 - Paris

Asma: Jimmy El Homsy hello, who are you Jimmy?
Jimmy: Hello, so I'm Jimmy El Homsy, a visual artist for a long time now although have been distant for seven years. The return journey started by the end of 2018 to fully dedicate time for art and to do the exhibitions and follow my passion.
Asma: And so you had an eclectic journey that took you from the AUST bench in Beirut to the Mon Popup gallery in Paris, why France and why Paris?
Jimmy: France for me has always been a dream I like France and I love Paris, it is the city I've visited the most in all my travels. It is an artistic city, it made history in art and have made a great impact with artists, museums and people who love art. For a first time outside Lebanon it is a dream realized here in Paris.
Asma: "Bain de Lumières" was the title of your first exhibition in Paris, the question of gender is a subject that is particularly close to your heart, you are Lebanese and this subject remains very little to be addressed in Lebanon not to say taboo what is the message you convey in your works and this first Parisian exhibition in particular?
Jimmy: There are two themes under "Bain de Lumières", "Summer 2040" and "Lit Skins". The first is generally about Lebanon, I am depicting a new imaginary country in 2040 in the future with more positivity, more hope and more light. And this should be projected into the world, a world a little more, not to say perfect but a better world. The second theme "Lit Skins" is figurative which I love to paint the most, particularly in this series the male figure to depict a different facet that is not typical of the male body, far from taboos, focusing on the light on the skin without the judgmental ideas of who is behind this figure.
Asma: Okay, you have in the past made other exhibitions in Lebanon, during our visit to your Parisian exhibition it caught our attention your exhibition that you have already made called "Dot Dot Dot", what can you tell us about it?
Jimmy: "Dot Dot Dot" is a project I explored in 2018 and it is still in continuity. Reconnecting people, reconnect with the human being inside us and create a liaison between all the human beings. So "Dot Dot Dot" is to fill a void in the ellipsis points and then joining the points will make a line connecting all of us the humans. To highlight, I keep repeating the notion of the human, because it is a message I want to always present in my works.
Asma: "If Lebanon were not my homeland I would have taken Lebanon as my homeland," said Gibran Khalil Gibran, what can artists like you bring to Lebanon today, in other words, what is your contribution to the future of Lebanon especially since you declare that you want to change the world with your art?
Jimmy: Gibran Khalil Gibran showed the beautiful face of Lebanon the artistic, poetic face, and the lovely face so I have a dream very close to that one and I think it's the same for any Lebanese artist, because everyone here wants to project a beautiful image to the world of a Lebanon that is not what you see in the News. For me Lebanon is a country that has a unique spirit I invite people to go explore it themselves, to see this light that will remain despite everything.
Asma: So "Lebanon a message" as Pope John Paul the second said, thank you very much Jimmy El Homsy.
Jimmy: Thank you very much Asma.
